Artifact 1 - Teacher Meeting Co-Curricular
The Voyager 9 meeting I attended early this semester gave me greater insight to providing the necessary tools and techniques required for students to learn in a safe environment. With this meeting, I observed a group of teachers that all teach the same course collaborating and helping each other on ways to help and support struggling students. I gained a deeper understanding of some of the strategies that teachers utilize that may be helpful for me in the future as I progress in my teaching practice. Teachers were telling one another strategies that may be effective in reaching particular students. I also learned from observing this meeting that as a teacher (especially a new teacher) that there will be a variety of tools and support systems to help me in reaching the students in my classroom. This gave me a deeper understanding of how to approach building a classroom where all of my students will be able to learn and succeed.
Artifact 2 - Tour de Rocky
This artifact demonstrates my attentiveness to the school culture and how other teachers are building learning environments inclusive to all learners and their needs. In this exercise, I witnessed how other teachers manage their classrooms and build a community where everyone is safe and feels comfortable to learn in. In this tour of Rocky Mountain High School, I observed a variety of ways in which teachers are creating places where students learn. For example, I saw how many of the teachers allow students to work and collaborate with each other during work time. Also, I observed teachers that are working with smaller groups of students who may be struggling to assist them in getting them where they need to be in order to succeed in the classroom.
Artifact 3 - Diversity Symposium
This speaker gave me a much deeper insight on what it means to be culturally aware and responsive in my teaching. I feel that this artifact demonstrates my growth in understanding of how to approach and teach students of different backgrounds than my own. I took a lot away from this speaker, and after this, I have become much more aware of the language I am using and the content that I am (and will be) teaching to students.
I feel that in regards to this standard, I am still developing. This semesters teaching experience has given me a lot of insight on how to do this, but I feel that I still need more practice in this. In my past teaching experiences, the students that I have taught were not very diverse. As I move forward, I will focus on ways that I can address all populations of students and be respectful to all when I am teaching. Also, I feel that it would be of benefit to attend more talks and/or conferences such as the Diversity Symposium at CSU. This speaker gave me a deeper insight to what it means to be a culturally aware teacher.
